Pio\u00adnee\u00adred by Steve Fur\u00adber, desi\u00adgner of the ori\u00adgi\u00adnal ARM and SpiNNaker1 archi\u00adtec\u00adtures, the SpiNNaker2 super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting plat\u00adform uses a large num\u00adber of low-power pro\u00adces\u00adsors for effi\u00adci\u00adently com\u00adpu\u00adting AI and other workloads.<\/p>\n<p>First-gene\u00adra\u00adtion SpiNNaker1 archi\u00adtec\u00adture is curr\u00adently used in dozens of rese\u00adarch groups across 23 count\u00adries world\u00adwide. San\u00addia Natio\u00adnal Labo\u00adra\u00adto\u00adries, Tech\u00adni\u00adcal Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of M\u00fcn\u00adchen and Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adt\u00e4t G\u00f6t\u00adtin\u00adgen are among the first cus\u00adto\u00admers pla\u00adcing orders for SpiNNaker2, which was deve\u00adlo\u00adped around com\u00admer\u00adcia\u00adli\u00adzed IP inven\u00adted in the Human Brain Pro\u00adject, a bil\u00adlion-euro rese\u00adarch pro\u00adject fun\u00added by the Euro\u00adpean Union to design intel\u00adli\u00adgent, effi\u00adci\u00adent arti\u00adfi\u00adcial systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbBrain-like com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adtion requi\u00adres pro\u00adgramma\u00adble dyna\u00admics, event-based com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion, and extreme scale,\u201d said Fred Roth\u00adgan\u00adger from San\u00addia Natio\u00adnal Labs. \u201cSpiNNaker2 is the most fle\u00adxi\u00adble neu\u00adral super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter archi\u00adtec\u00adture available today. At San\u00addia, we are exci\u00adted to build appli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons on this ama\u00adzing system.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Tech\u00adni\u00adcal spe\u00adci\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons for SpiNNaker2 include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The SpiNN\u00adcloud ser\u00adver board con\u00adsists of 48 SpiNNaker2 chips. Each chip con\u00adta\u00adins a low-power mesh of 152 Arm-based cores with a wide variety of acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adtors inclu\u00adding dis\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adted GPU-like units desi\u00adgned to boost neu\u00adro\u00admor\u00adphic, hybrid, and main\u00adstream AI model computations.<\/li>\n<li>The hybrid capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties of SpiNNaker2 allow it to com\u00adbine prac\u00adti\u00adcal algo\u00adrithms from Machine Lear\u00adning, energy effi\u00adci\u00adency from an event-based ope\u00adra\u00adtion, and the trust\u00adwort\u00adhi\u00adness of rule-based lay\u00aders gover\u00adning the backend of applications.<\/li>\n<li>The com\u00admer\u00adcial sys\u00adtem is inten\u00added to be sca\u00adled up through a multi-rack setup, each com\u00adpo\u00adsed of 90 SpiNN\u00adcloud ser\u00adver boards to enable at least 10 bil\u00adlion inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adted neu\u00adrons firing in real-time. As a super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter desi\u00adgned to also allo\u00adcate Machine Lear\u00adning workloads, the pre-exas\u00adcale sys\u00adtem can sup\u00adport up to 0.3 exaops.<\/li>\n<li>SpiNNaker2 dif\u00adfe\u00adren\u00adtia\u00adtes from GPU solu\u00adti\u00adons by being more ver\u00adsa\u00adtile, having a bet\u00adter per\u00adfor\u00admance, having a lower cost to run and having a bet\u00adter availability.<\/li>\n<li>In con\u00adtrast to GPU solu\u00adti\u00adons, SpiNNaker2 uses a large num\u00adber of asyn\u00adchro\u00adnous low-power units to tackle workloads. This leads to more ver\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adlity, energy-pro\u00adpor\u00adtio\u00adnal ope\u00adra\u00adtion, effi\u00adci\u00adent com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion, and lower ope\u00adra\u00adtion cost. SpiNN\u00adcloud is the first to make this neu\u00adro\u00admor\u00adphic super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting archi\u00adtec\u00adture broadly available and at sca\u00adles that exceed any other neu\u00adro\u00admor\u00adphic system.<\/li>\n<li>SpiNNaker2 goes bey\u00adond neu\u00adro\u00admor\u00adphic archi\u00adtec\u00adture by offe\u00adring hybrid AI acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adtion, cru\u00adcial for desig\u00adning sys\u00adtems \u201cin the third wave of AI,\u201d defi\u00adned by DARPA as sys\u00adtems that under\u00adstand the con\u00adtext and envi\u00adron\u00adment in which they ope\u00adrate, and over time build under\u00adly\u00ading expl\u00adana\u00adtory models that allow them to cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adrize real-world phenomena.<\/li>\n<li>SpiNNaker2 will be initi\u00adally available as a cloud plat\u00adform solu\u00adtion, enab\u00adling early cus\u00adto\u00admers to get access to the tech\u00adno\u00adlogy as cost effi\u00adci\u00adently as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOur vision is to pio\u00adneer the future of arti\u00adfi\u00adcial intel\u00adli\u00adgence through brain-inspi\u00adred super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter tech\u00adno\u00adlogy, and to create sys\u00adtems that are not only powerful but also trans\u00adpa\u00adrent and explainable,\u201d said Hec\u00adtor Gon\u00adza\u00adlez, co-foun\u00adder and co-CEO at SpiNN\u00adcloud Sys\u00adtems. \u201cWe\u2019re buil\u00adding the most advan\u00adced brain-like super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting plat\u00adform on the mar\u00adket, which posi\u00adti\u00adons us as the mar\u00adket lea\u00adder in hybrid AI HPC.
