If you look back at that time and compare it with today, what has chan\u00adged in Saxony\u2019s inno\u00adva\u00adtion land\u00adscape since then? H<\/strong><strong>ow do you per\u00adceive the inno\u00adva\u00adtion eco\u00adsys\u00adtem&nbsp;today?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Roh\u00adayem:<\/strong><\/em>Riboxx was foun\u00added on May 7, 2009 as a spin-off from the Medi\u00adcal Faculty of the TU Dres\u00adden. Per\u00adhaps as a remin\u00adder, 2008 was the year of the glo\u00adbal ban\u00adking cri\u00adsis cau\u00adsed by the Leh\u00admann Brot\u00adhers affair. Sax\u00adony was also affec\u00adted, e.g. by the insol\u00advency of Lan\u00addes\u00adbank Sach\u00adsen and the resi\u00adgna\u00adtion of the then finance minis\u00adter. Start\u00ading a busi\u00adness see\u00admed like a high risk in those years and I was advi\u00adsed against it. I did it any\u00adway because I think and act coun\u00adter\u00adcy\u00adcli\u00adcally. And as an entre\u00adpre\u00adneur I took the full risk, left the uni\u00adver\u00adsity and took over the manage\u00adment of Riboxx, alt\u00adhough as a civil ser\u00advant I had recei\u00adved a call to a pro\u00adfes\u00adsor\u00adship at a renow\u00adned uni\u00adver\u00adsity, with very com\u00adfor\u00adta\u00adble con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adons. The Riboxx tur\u00adned 12&nbsp;years old on May 7,&nbsp;2021.<\/p>\n<p>Why am I tel\u00adling you this? Because I am con\u00advin\u00adced that the essence of inno\u00adva\u00adtion is the foun\u00adders. They are the ones who get up one mor\u00adning and think: I have a solu\u00adtion to this pro\u00adblem \u2013 and I want to imple\u00adment and mar\u00adket it. And for that, I\u2019m wil\u00adling to take a risk, because I have to believe in this solu\u00adtion and believe that I can solve this pro\u00adblem with it. And help cus\u00adto\u00admers solve their pro\u00adblem. And we need to pro\u00admote these cha\u00adrac\u00adter traits more stron\u00adgly \u2013 we need to sup\u00adport peo\u00adple from the inno\u00adva\u00adtion land\u00adscape of Sax\u00adony to sum\u00admon up the cou\u00adrage and take the risk. It\u2019s worth&nbsp;it!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-t-wrap__inner\">\n<div class=\"c-t-grid-s-12\">\n<p><strong><em>futureSAX: <\/em>What was your incen\u00adtive to par\u00adti\u00adci\u00adpate in the Ideas Com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion (today: Founder\u2019s Award) and what do you recom\u00admend to aspi\u00adring foun\u00adders who want to apply for the Founder\u2019s Award&nbsp;today?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Roh\u00adayem: <\/em>I wan\u00adted to have my idea reviewed by experts and expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced com\u00adpa\u00adnies and busi\u00adness peo\u00adple to gain visi\u00adbi\u00adlity for inves\u00adtors. I was able to do that because that\u2019s how TGFS took notice of&nbsp;me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"c-t-container-wrapper c-t-container-wrapper--highlight\">\n<div class=\"c-t-wrap c-t-wrap--full\">\n<div class=\"c-t-wrap__inner\">\n<div id=\"c18825\" class=\"c-t-grid-s-12\">\n<article class=\"c-m-highlight-teaser o-background-gradient-pattern o-clip-to-left c-m-highlight-teaser--no-image\">\n<div class=\"c-m-highlight-teaser__inner\">\n<div class=\"c-m-highlight-teaser__col\">\n<div class=\"c-m-highlight-teaser__content\">\n<div class=\"c-t-wrap__inner\">\n<div class=\"c-t-grid-s-12\">\n<p><em><strong>futureSAX:<\/strong> <\/em><strong>What added value were you able to gene\u00adrate for yours\u00adelf from participating?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><br>\n  <em>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Rohayem:&nbsp;<\/em><br>\n<\/strong>In my opi\u00adnion, the added value lies in the oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to review the busi\u00adness model of the future com\u00adpany. Because it is indis\u00adpensable to have this model veri\u00adfied by third par\u00adties (who are more objec\u00adtive than you). In my opi\u00adnion, this is the first step in mini\u00admi\u00adzing entre\u00adpre\u00adneu\u00adrial risk. And thus increase the pro\u00adba\u00adbi\u00adlity of making money with the busi\u00adness model. Why money? Because the main pro\u00adblem for a startup in the first 36 months is liqui\u00addity. And the solu\u00adtion to this pro\u00adblem is: posi\u00adtive cash flow through a valid busi\u00adness&nbsp;model.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-t-wrap__inner\">\n<div class=\"c-t-grid-s-12\">\n<p><strong>futureSAX: Your social and eco\u00adno\u00admic com\u00admit\u00adment is remar\u00adkable: As mana\u00adging direc\u00adtor of Riboxx GmbH, GWT-TUD GmbH and board mem\u00adber of TUDAG TU Dres\u00adden Akti\u00aden\u00adge\u00adsell\u00adschaft, you are active in com\u00adpa\u00adnies that sus\u00adtain\u00adably enrich the Saxon inno\u00adva\u00adtion eco\u00adsys\u00adtem. As a pro\u00adfound expert on the scene, what do you recom\u00admend to young and estab\u00adlished com\u00adpa\u00adnies in terms of inno\u00adva\u00adtion management?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><br>\n  <em>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Rohayem:&nbsp;<\/em><br>\n<\/strong>Believe in your idea and don\u2019t lose con\u00adfi\u00addence that one day you will launch a pro\u00adduct or ser\u00advice that will help peo\u00adple solve their pro\u00adblem. The other day I was sit\u00adting at home having break\u00adfast and loo\u00adking at the objects in front of and around me: Pla\u00adtes, kni\u00adves, forks, glas\u00adses, the table, the chairs, the lamp, the walls, the win\u00addows, etc. \u2026 Many things that are the foun\u00adda\u00adtion of our lives were crea\u00adted by inno\u00adva\u00adtors. Peo\u00adple who thought: How can I solve this pro\u00adblem? And have deve\u00adlo\u00adped a solu\u00adtion that helps us make our lives easier. That is the dri\u00adving force of an inno\u00adva\u00adtor. Inno\u00adva\u00adtors have a deep fri\u00adend\u00adship with their peers. The\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfore, my recom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion: If you believe you can do some\u00adthing good for your fel\u00adlow human beings and have the strength to see it through, then you are on the right path. It\u2019s worth&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n<section class=\"c-t-container-wrapper o-lines o-lines--style-1\">\n<div class=\"c-t-wrap\">\n<div class=\"c-t-wrap__inner\">\n<div class=\"c-t-grid-s-12 c-t-grid-m-10 c-t-grid-m-offset-1 c-t-grid-l-10 c-t-grid-l-offset-1\">\n<div class=\"c-t-wrap__inner\">\n<div class=\"c-t-grid-s-12\">\n<p><strong><em>futureSAX:<\/em> You once said \u00bbRiboxx is meant to trans\u00adform: turn tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies into pro\u00adducts that make money and then crank the wheel of inno\u00adva\u00adtion again.\u00ab Why is this so important from your point of&nbsp;view?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><br>\n  <strong>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Rohayem:&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\n<\/em>This is very important: money is only the means to achieve the goal. But wit\u00adhout these means, not\u00adhing is pos\u00adsi\u00adble. And the price a com\u00adpany pays for stay\u00ading in busi\u00adness through inno\u00adva\u00adtion is reve\u00adnue (or pro\u00adfit). You can only drive inno\u00adva\u00adtion if you gene\u00adrate enough pro\u00adfit from the busi\u00adness to spend some of it on it. As Peter Dru\u00adcker once said, pro\u00adfit is the price you have to pay to stay in business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-t-wrap__inner\">\n<div class=\"c-t-grid-s-12\">\n<p><strong><em>futureSAX:<\/em> How did you expe\u00adri\u00adence the trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion for com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtive advan\u00adta\u00adges of Riboxx or what con\u00adcrete bene\u00adfits were you able to gene\u00adrate from&nbsp;it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><br>\n  <strong>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Rohayem:&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\n<\/em>Riboxx means <strong>RNA<\/strong> <strong>In<\/strong>a <strong>Box<\/strong>. All of our tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies focus on RNA with the goal of pro\u00addu\u00adcing a drug from RNA. When I foun\u00added Riboxx, I had a vali\u00adda\u00adted busi\u00adness model, ple\u00adnty of money, and one of the lar\u00adgest indus\u00adtry part\u00adners who publicly announ\u00adced that they had a very strong inte\u00adrest in our inno\u00adva\u00adtion. Two years later, the mar\u00adket dis\u00adap\u00adpeared. The indus\u00adtrial part\u00adner has clo\u00adsed its branch in Ger\u00admany, and all other pos\u00adsi\u00adble part\u00adners have with\u00addrawn from the mar\u00adket. It was devas\u00adta\u00adting and that meant the end of Riboxx. It went from 100 to 0. I could not and would not give&nbsp;up.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I went back to the dra\u00adwing board and worked hard on how to open up new mar\u00adkets with our inno\u00adva\u00adtive tech\u00adno\u00adlogy. And found the mar\u00adket for immune boos\u00adters to fight can\u00adcer and boost vac\u00adci\u00adnes. That was in 2011. Since then, Riboxx has been sel\u00adling its pro\u00adducts and tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies world\u00adwide. This trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion has enab\u00adled us to think for\u00adward, but also glo\u00adbally. Future-ori\u00aden\u00adted because we are taking advan\u00adtage of RNA tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies today, in 2021. Many of us have recei\u00adved the mRNA vac\u00adcine against COVID-19. In 2011, when the RNA mar\u00adket dis\u00adap\u00adpeared, a renow\u00adned sci\u00aden\u00adtist told me: You can\u2019t make drugs from&nbsp;RNA.<\/p>\n<p>When the mRNA vac\u00adcine against COVID-19 was deployed world\u00adwide in 2020 and 2021, I cal\u00adled him and asked, \u00bbSo, have you chan\u00adged your&nbsp;mind?<\/p>\n<p>And glo\u00adbally, because I mar\u00adke\u00adted the tech\u00adno\u00adlogy from Sin\u00adga\u00adpore to San Diego. Prof. Roh\u00adayem, why is net\u00adwor\u00adking important in the area of know\u00adledge and tech\u00adno\u00adlogy trans\u00adfer and what untap\u00adped poten\u00adtial do you see for trans\u00adfer in Saxony?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><br>\n  <strong>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Rohayem:&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\n<\/em>Net\u00adwor\u00adking is very important, because in Sax\u00adony we only have a chance to make a dif\u00adfe\u00adrence tog\u00ade\u00adther. The world is open, you get com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtors from China, Rus\u00adsia and the USA. Some pro\u00adjects can only be tack\u00adled tog\u00ade\u00adther sim\u00adply because of the com\u00adple\u00adxity of the issues. To do this, Sax\u00adony must become more inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adnal and address all poten\u00adtial mar\u00adkets, in the EU, in Asia, in the Middle East. And the Saxons can do that. Just look at the long history of Saxon inven\u00adti\u00adons, from the Melita cof\u00adfee fil\u00adter to the sin\u00adgle-lens reflex camera. It was Saxons who inven\u00adted these solu\u00adti\u00adons at the begin\u00adning of the 20<sup class=\"ordinal\">th<\/sup> cen\u00adtury.
